Making Vrat Ke Aloo At Home

In this section we go through few easy steps which you need to take to make Vrat Ke Aloo at home. We have added pictures of milestones so you can validate your progress as you make Vrat Ke Aloo.

Preparation of Vrat Ke Aloo

To make Vrat ke Aloo, first take potatoes and wash them properly.

Now take 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker and add potatoes to it.

Boil potatoes to make Vrat Ke Aloo

Switch on the flame and take two whistles on medium flame and switch off the flame. Let the pressure release gradually.

Now open the pressure cooker and peel the potatoes. If the potatoes are too hot just remove the hot water and keep them in a bowl or a vessel for sometime.

If you are in a rush to make Vrat Ke Aloo probably because of fasting or don’t have much time to wait for potatoes to gradually cool down, you can add cold water but this might change the flavour slightly. The change in flavour usually depends on how long you kept them in cold water along with the type of potatoes.

Cut them into small or medium sized pieces. Since, these are boiled potatoes you may not want to make them too small in size.

Chop green chillies into small pieces.

You are now ready with all Ingredients required to make Vrat Ke Aloo

Making of Vrat Ke Aloo

Take a frying pan and add clarified butter in it. Put it on high flame.

Now once clarified butter is hot add Cumin seeds and chopped green chillies. Saute them for less than a minute. Don’t saute for too long else it will burn and Vrat Ke Aloo might not taste good.

Now add 2 cup of water in it and keep it for 2 mins.

Once the Cumin seeds become brown in color
Add some water to sated Cumin seeds and Green chillies

Add boiled potato pieces to it and add Rock Salt and Red Chillies powder to it. Now stir it and keep it on the flame for 5 – 7 mins.

Add potatoes and other spices. Mix them well to make Vrat Ke Aloo

Now add some chopped coriander leaves and switch off the flame.

Chef Recommendation for Vrat Ke Aloo

  • If you would like a thick gravy, mash one potato while cooking.
  • You can adjust water quantity as per your choice and thickness required.
  • If you would like to prepare dry Vrat ke Aloo then do not add water and instead double the quantity of clarified butter used.
  • Since Vegetable oil is not considered for cooking fasting food hence we have used Clarified butter to cook the dish. Alternatively you can use groundnut oil to cook the dish.

  • 300 g Potatoes Aloo
  • 10 g Green chillies Hari Mirch
  • 1 tbsp Clarified Butter Ghee
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds Jeera
  • 1/2 tsp Rock Salt Sendha Namak
  • 1/2 tsp Red Chillies Powder Lal Mirch
  • Few Coriander leaves Hara Dhaniya
